The house made of sticks...

I have recently discovered the main two reasons why I couldn't teach kindergarten or first grade full time.
  1. They are just too cute.
  2. They do and say really funny things.  And even if they are totally inappropriate or irrelevant, I have to laugh.  Like a lot.

Case and point...

Today, I am ending Kindergarten with the song "Over in the Meadow", which is about animals and their homes.  I like to sing the first part of the verse about the animal home,  and have the students guess the animal that lives there.
Me (Verse five): "Over in the meadow in a new little hive..."
Students: A BEE! A BEE!
Easy right?  Well then it got interesting...
Me (Verse six): "Over in the meadow in a house made of sticks..."
I say house, but the real words are actually "dam made of sticks".  Saying "dam" in a kindergarten class always has unpredictable results, so I just avoid that trainwreck all together.
Now every other class I've had this week has shouted out "BEAVER" with no problem.

The response today?
Students: A PIG!
Me (confused): A pig? No pigs don't live in...ohhhhhhhh...I see.

After that, I could barely finish the song, because that was by far the funniest moment of the day. And they were so serious too.  They just knew it was a pig.  One of them did figure out that I really meant beaver.  But technically...they weren't wrong.
